How the Panto Story Time Program Operates

Panto Story Time is a mobile storytelling program that brings character-driven, theatrical story experiences to schools, libraries, and community events. Unlike a full stage production, Story Time performances are small-scale, flexible, and scheduled based on bookings rather than a fixed performance run.

We are always accepting and onboarding new storytellers. Storytellers may be brought into the program individually or in small groups, depending on current needs.

Because of this structure:

There is no guaranteed number of performances. Story Time sessions are scheduled as bookings are confirmed and are offered based on storyteller availability. Storytellers are never expected to cancel existing commitments in order to participate. Availability may affect how often a storyteller is scheduled.

Preparation & Rehearsals

Storytellers will be scheduled for a set number of preparation sessions upon onboarding. These sessions are used to:

  • Assign characters and stories

  • Discuss performance expectations and program structure

  • Plan costuming, character choices, and logistics

Storytellers are expected to do the majority of their preparation independently. There is no ongoing group rehearsal period. Each storyteller develops their character, voice, and performance style on their own, using provided guidelines and support.

Performances

Once onboarded, storytellers are scheduled for Story Time sessions as bookings become available. Performances typically last 20–30 minutes and may take place at various locations. All Story Time performances are currently held in Northern Utah. Details such as location, timing, and expectations will be shared as early as possible for each booking.

Contract Term

Participation in the Panto Story Time program is a six-month contract commitment. The contract will be provided at the first preparation session. At the end of the six months, storytellers may choose to renew their contract if they wish to continue in the program.

Program Expectations

Storytellers are expected to:

  • Communicate availability clearly and honestly

  • Arrive prepared, in costume, and ready to perform independently

  • Maintain professionalism, punctuality, and reliability

  • Be comfortable engaging directly with children and small audiences

  • Adapt to different venues, group sizes, and age ranges

  • Embrace playful, character-driven storytelling

This program is best suited for performers who enjoy flexibility, autonomy, and creating meaningful, imaginative moments in a small-scale, interactive setting.

By auditioning, storytellers acknowledge that they understand and accept the booking-based, availability-dependent structure of the Panto Story Time program.

What a Panto Story Time Looks Like

A Panto Story Time is a fully immersive storytelling experience where you bring a classic fairy tale to life for children at schools, libraries, and community events. You arrive in costume as a beloved character from the book you’ll be sharing, introduce yourself in character, warmly greet the children, and immediately set a playful, imaginative tone.

Each session includes:

Interactive Reading
You read a picture book aloud while staying fully in character. Children are encouraged to participate by answering questions, making predictions, repeating phrases, and helping move the story along.

Character Moments
You add personality through voice, movement, facial expressions, and gentle humor. Small theatrical choices help keep young audiences engaged and make the story feel alive.

Imagination & Literacy Focus
Your performance supports early literacy and creativity, making reading feel exciting, accessible, and fun for a wide range of ages.

Meet & Greet
After the story, you remain in character for a brief meet-and-greet, answering questions, posing for photos, and creating a memorable one-on-one moment for each child.

Session Length
Most performances run approximately 20–30 minutes, depending on the group size and schedule.

What to prepare!

For your audition, please submit a video of you reading a children’s book fully in character as one of the characters from the story. Do not introduce or explain who the character is. Let your voice, physicality, facial expressions, and storytelling choices do the work. We’re looking for clear character commitment, playful engagement, and the ability to bring a story to life in a way that would naturally connect with children. Think of it as a real Story Time moment, not a presentation.
